The Aubuchon Family in France

The Aubuchon name is French, but of uncertain origin. It is probably from the patronymic prefix au + buchon, a dialect term for a woodcutter (Standard French bûcheron).1

The Aubuchon family has been traced back to Normandy, France where Jean Aubuchon was born in 1591.  The names of his parents are currently unknown.  It is debatable as to whether Jean was born in Ste. Rémi de Dieppe, Normandy or St. Jacques de Dieppe, Normandy.  Jean married Catherine Marchand (Lemarchand, Le Marchand) around 1616 in Ste. Rémi de Dieppe, Normandy, France.  He was a merchant and a sponsor of voyages to Canada.  It is likely he sponsored his three children, Jacques "dit" Le Loyal, Marie and Jean "dit" L'Esperance to immigrate to Canada during the 1640's.  The three children were the only known descendants of Jean.  Jean died on October 8, 1647 in Ste. Rémi de Dieppe, Normandy, France.

Catherine Marchand, Jean's wife, was born around 1595 in Ste. Rémi de Dieppe, Normandy.  Jean and Catherine had two known children, Jacques dit "Le Loyal" Aubuchon and Marie Aubuchon.

Jacques was born around December 1, 1617, in Ste. Rémi de Dieppe, Normandy, France.  He received his first name from his uncle, Jacques Marchand who was also his godfather along with Catherine2.  Jacques' dit "Le Loyal" translates to "the Honest one".  A second dit name for Jacques is "De le Loyal" which translated means "of the Honest one".  He qualified as a Maître Charpentier (Master Carpenter) and would eventually immigrate to Canada.

Not much is known about Marie, the second child of Jean and Catherine, other than her birth date, December 20, 1629, birth location, Ste. Rémi de Dieppe, Normandy, France and that she too immigrated to Canada.

Upon the death of Catherine Marchand in April of 1632, Jean married Jeanne Gille around 1632 in St. Jacques de Dieppe, Normandy, Marchand, France.  Jeanne Gille, the daughter of Matadrin Gille and Jeanne Huet was born July 1616 in Normandy, France and died about September 19, 1654.  Jean and Jeanne had one child, Jean dit "L'Esperance" Aubuchon.

Jean dit "L'Esperance" Aubuchon was the half brother of Jacques and Marie.  Jean's dit, "L'Esperance", translates to "the Hope".  He was born around 1634 in St. Rémi de Dieppe, Normandy, Marchand, France.  He immigrated to Canada around 1643.
