Joseph Vital Beauvais

It is most fortunate that Henry Brackenridge wrote a description of the Beauvais family and house.  "He (Henry Brackenridge) was brought to Ste. Genevieve from Pittsburgh in the 1790's to learn French and lived with the Vital Beauvais family.  He was six years old at the time.  He described Monsieur Beauvias:  " as a tall dry Old French Canadian dressed in the costume of the place; that is, with a blue cotton handkerchief on his head, one corner thereof descending behind and partially covering the eel-skin which bound his hair, a check shirt, coarse linen pantaloons and the Indian sandals or moccasins, the only covering of the feet worn by both sexes."
